UGADI PACHADI


Hello every body wish u all a HAPPY UGADI".Ugadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon’s orbit. It is a day when mantras are chanted and predictions made for the new year.The 2009 ugadi is called as "VIRODHINAMA UGADI".
Traditionally, the panchangasravanam or listening to the yearly calendar was done at the temples or at the Town square. The celebration of Ugadi is marked by religious zeal and social merriment. Special dishes are prepared for the occasion. In Andhra Pradesh, eatables such as "pulihora", "bobbatlu" and preparations made with raw mango go well with the occasion especially "UGADI PACHADI" made with different combinations ,which includes "SHAD RUCHULU".the tradition of making this recipe as been followed from many years.
The Ugadi day begins with ritual showers(oil head bath) followed by prayers, and then preparing, eating of a specific mixture called “Ugadi Pachadi” which is the mixure of the following.
Neem Buds (Flowers for Bitter), Tamarind Juice for Sour taste, Raw Mango for Tangy taste, Green Chilli for Hot, Jaggery for Sweet taste, Pinch of Salt for Salty taste.Go here to Prepare Ugadi Pachadi


INGREDIENTS:

Tamarind-big lemon size
Jaggery/bellam-1 glass
Poppy seeds/gasa gasalu-1 teaspoon
Roasted chenadal/putnalu- 2 1/2 tea spoons
Grated dry coconut-3 tea spoons
neem flower/vepapootha-1 spoon
Watermelon seeds/puchakaya/kalingiri seeds-2 teaspoons
karbujamusk melon seeds-2 teaspoons
Grated green mango-2 tea spoons
Salt-pinch
Chili paste-1/4 th teaspoon

METHOD:

  1. in a deep bowl add tamarind,grated jaggery and water,let it rest for 1/2 an hour.Now extract juice from it,then strain it.Pour water and make it liquid.

  2. Add remaining ingredients,mix well.

  3. Add ice cubes,to make it chilled and serve
